Title: Chart Request: Sonic 1 Genesis for the Game Boy Advance.
Post by: Don on April 04, 2014, 08:05:02 am
Okay, so I've been thinking about this: According to Parax reasoning, which is "If the game lags for everyone the same on standardized hardware, it's allowed." We should allow S1GBA for competition.

1) WHY?!

First off, we have Sonic 1 and Sonic 1 2013 as charts. S1-13 looks like a different enough game to warrant different and other charts.

Now, why does S1GBA not have different charts? My arguments:

1) It has anniversary and classic mode, in which sonic may or may not use spindash.

2) The Physics are completely different compared to sonic 1, there is no spike glitch, the maps look a little more compressed, you can hit the final zone boss twice (!!) when he comes out of the woodwork.

3) It has a different game-feel overall, different tricks, there are no possible zips. The Level Select does not allow you to go to specific levels or special stages, just the beginning of a zone.

Charts that I think should be included:

Anniversary mode - Times
Anniversary mode - Rings
Classic mode - Times
Classic mode - Rings

(Special Stages - rings)

The reason why I don't think special stages should be included, is because  they go TOO fast, but that might be just me and others could have a different opinion on this.

EDIT: Because I was in an IRL hurry before creating this post, let me add this now: Scores are unreliable because not all enemies spawn at every stage of the game. I've encountered many enemies that spawned at some instances but not in others (mostly in labyrinth zone, the laggiest zone of the game).

how is something being too fast a bad thing for a speedrunning community?

I think the fact that you can only select the zone is dumb.

Yeah, the zone selection hurts if you want to do a certain IL.

There are games where you can't specifically choose acts (such as S1GG) that are acceptable for submission, though.

Same and if I remember I think Mastakirby and Hyper said that they would compete in this game too.

Why no special times? I don't know anything about them, but "too fast" hardly seems like a good reason not to include them?

Special stages don't have a timer.

Special Stages indeed do not have a timer. They're the same special stages as in Sonic 1, the only difference being the speed in which the stage moves, which is iirc slightly faster. Also the jumping felt a little different.

As I've said before I don't think scores might be that reliable simply due to the fact that not all enemies spawn at all times for everyone, so it would be down to luck for people to get high scores in some stages.

I agree that their should be time charts for classic and anniversary
I feel that there should be only ring charts for anniversary mode, as if the only difference is the spindash then having classic charts too seems a bit much, and you'll probably be able to get the same max rings for both modes, I doubt spindash has an affect, although it might
I agree that there should be no score charts for reasons don mentioned
Special stage charts should be included for how many rings you can obtain

I checked GH1 to see if it could be used to get back up the S slopes easier, but it's not possible to even get up the bottom one in this game.

I'd be okay with one set of ring charts.

So, all in all, we're absolutely sure that any mode can be used to obtain rings for the future ring charts, but there will only be one category which is sonic/rings, right?

Yes

So anything else that needs to be discussed first or are the charts good to go now?

Also, any rules?

As far as I can tell there's nothing else that needs discussing, as far as rules go, they're gonna be similar to sonic 1 SMD, so regarding debug mode or pressing anything while the game is paused, although I'm not to familiar with debug mode of s1gba or of it even exists. But yeah I think we're good to go unless anyone else has anything else to bring up.

Yes. For Times, there should be a rule disallowing anything but a full run of the stage.

Main point being you can quit the stage, reenter it at a star post, and the timer will be at 0:00 and you could finish it in a lower time than possible in a normal full-stage run.

That's already covered by a general rule.

There's no debug code in this game.

if we're gonna have seperate charts for the diferent versions of S1, should there be a S1 3DS chart too?
it does play slightly different (some good, some bad)

How different?  I've heard a few people say that, but they haven't given an example.

Honestly I think S13D would be overkill.

well... for one there is an option to do spindash, but not exactly the point.

but sometimes momentum doesn't want to work and you'll just randomly stop on a 1/4 loop (a ramp) like in the beginning of spring yard 1, if you spin off the spring to the left,  you'll stop before getting halfway up the ramp... it's annoying sometimes... i havent played in a bit so if i find something else i'll let you know.

I can't replicate this.  Even if it only happens on 3DS, it's a minor glitch that doesn't help at all.
