Gaming and Grazing / ITT RPG needs YOU to play a game
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:40:27 pm »
AKA ITT What RPG Has Been Doing Instead of Working on TSCA2

tl;dr I've been making a prototype JRPG that incorporates common elements of ARPG games in an attempt to make it fun. also theoretically there should never be any need to grind for levels unless you run like a bitch from fights all the time BUT WE SHALL SEE??

AND NOW I NEED OTHER PEOPLE TO PLAY IT AND GIVE ME FEEDBACK ON IT HERE IS A LINK http://shiningfarce.tumblr.com/

also zeph pls dont kill me, i even made a reference to you in my gaem!

I had a pretty decent first run of Normal-Ironman Mode, got myself a Colonel, a Major, a Captain, couple of Lieutenants. Decent headway into the tech, solid battle tactics, AND THEN I GOT A TERROR SITE WITH TWO CYBERDISCS AND EIGHT CHRYSALLIDS. ENTIRE SQUAD DEAD. TOO SAD TO CONTINUE WITH THAT SAVEFILE. #X-COM

Competition Central / SANIC FORE EPISODE TOO CHARTZ
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:27:20 pm »
HAVING JUST COMPLETED THIS IT IS NOT NEARLY AS SHITTY AS I EXPECTED.

For most stages, Times/Rings/Score as Sonic and T/S as Super Sonic is A-OK, including boss stages, though boss times should obviously be in the boss category (HI MY NAME IS THE S06 CHARTS).

Exceptions: Snowy Park Boss, Sky Fortress Act 1, Sky Fortress Boss as well as Death Egg Mk.II Act 1, should not have Rings/Score charts, as they each have an infinitely looping section with respawning rings.

Sky Fortress Act 1 is an autoscroller up until the boss, whether or not that is grounds for it to be included in the Times division is up to the powers that be!?

Special Stages should have Rings and Score, and possibly Time? Time would end up as HOLD BOOST TO WIN, but then again we tracked the SG3DS SS' for Time and consistency is good and all.

Competition Central / Sonic Generations Challenges!
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:19:39 am »
Inspired by the original series for SA2B

This is a bit of a wild shot in the dark, as it has been literally years since we had a successful one of these; but I'm hoping the fact that Generations is a) new, b) good and c) has quickly garnered a lot of competition here compared to most recent releases, means that we can get one of these threads rolling and have some good old fashioned fun. Any and all players of all skill levels are welcome to participate! Naturally this is a competition, but the aim above all, as mentioned, is to have some fun.

Competition rules
(These are basically copied from the above topic, so if you read those, feel free to skip this section.)

These challenges will have you performing various, unconventional tasks within levels. According to how well you do, you are assigned a letter rank and then awarded a number of points. There are two types of challenge: Fixed Rank and Competition. Fixed Rank has set boundaries for each Grade, whilst Competition is an 'every-man-for-himself' type affair, where the best player gets the top rank.

Point allocation for grades are as follows:

S: 5 Points
A: 4 Points
B: 3 Points
C: 2 Points
D: 1 Point
E: 0 Points

Challenge Rules

All challenges are to strict deadlines, no allowances will be made unless a genuine reason is given in advance. For example, Player A will be out of town for a week, and will miss a challenge. If they inform me in advance, they can have a little extra time after the deadline of the challenge to 'catch up' and do the challenge. No other exceptions will be made. You have been warned.

Challenges will last for exactly four days after the time of posting; the exception is this first challenge, which will last for seven days instead.

Challenges will typically have participants perform X, with various restrictions. Naturally, breaching these restrictions invalidates the stat.

Submissions and Formating

Submissions can be made either in the thread, or PM'd to me if you want to keep your stat a secret until the deadline (but why would you do that, really?)

While not strictly necessary to do, it is helpful to me if you post your stats in the thread with the following formatting for Fixed Rank Challenges:

Username
Stat
Stat2 (if required)
Rank

And the following formatting for Competition Challenges:

Username
Stat
Stat2 (if required)

Providing Proof

Providing proof of your accomplishments with regards to these challenges is not necessary. Generations is not an easily recordable game, and TSC has a strong history with using the honour system with regards to submissions. Just to reiterate, you are NOT required to post picture/video proof of your challenge stats, however, feel free to do so if it takes your fancy! (I will be for fun :P)

I think that pretty much covers it all, if anyone has any questions, feel free to post them, and so without further ado, here is the first challenge:

Challenge #1: Green Hill Classic - Sk8 Edition

 - Complete Green Hill Classic as fast as possible with the following restrictions:

 - You must have the Boardmaster skill equipped.
 - You must activate the skill as soon as the level starts.
 - You must remain on the skateboard until after you reach the red spring that launches Sonic to the wooden loop that leads into the final section. Losing the skateboard before this point in the level caps your rank for the run to a maximum of a B. For additional clarification, this is the spring next to the Crabmeat, and just after two ring monitors and one life monitor. Extra note, you can go over the top and miss that spring entirely, and your stat is fine.

Ranks

S Rank: Finish in under 1 minute.
A Rank: Finish in under 1 minute 5 seconds.
B Rank: Finish in under 1 minutes 10 seconds.
C Rank: Finish in under 1 minutes 20 seconds.
D Rank: Finish in under 1 minutes 35 seconds.
E Rank: Anything over 1 minutes 35 seconds.

The deadline for this challenge is exactly one week from the posting time of this post, and I will add submitted stats, as well as the rankings to this post when appropriate.

Current Challenge Submissions:

romanemul
Time: 0:50:44
Rank:S

Werey
Time: 0:50:51
Rank: S

HyperSonic7701
Time: 0:51:67
Rank: S

Umbreon
Time: 0:53:11
Rank: S

flying fox
Time: 55.49
Rank: S

Millernusgaming
Time: 0:56:15
Rank: S

Zeupar
Time: 0:56.43
Rank: S

RPG
Time: 0:57:64
Rank: S

afolita
Time: 0:57:76
Rank: S

Also, I tested this challenge on console and went over the top route without losing the board and finished in under a minute on the first go. I then tried to record this on PC, and the jump from the spring is insanely hard, so I altered the challenge rule slightly so as to make it easier; I didn't intend on the first challenge being retardedly hard, sorry about that :(

Gaming and Grazing / Pokemon Nuzlocke!
« on: February 23, 2012, 10:32:53 am »
After my heart was broken by my last failed Nuzlocke run of Heart Gold last night, I decided I would start over and give it another go AND THIS TIME KEEP A JOURNAL OF MY ADVENTURES OF SOME SORTS in lieu of my ability to actually draw.

What is Nuzlocke I hear you ask? Read this: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nuzlocke_Challenge

I am using the two main rules as well as the following additional rules:

 - No duplicate captures
 - Nicknames must be given to team members
 - Black/White out is a game over and the save file must be deleted
 - Fainted Pokemon are to be deposited into the final box in the PC so that they may live on in memory /salute
 - Shiny Pokemon are always eligible for capture

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO

Captain's Log, Day 1

 - Began my game as Viktor.
 - Got a Cyndaquil named Frosty.
 - Beat my rival and named him Batman.
 - Caught a Pidgey on Route 29 and named her Flappy.
 - Strolled into Route 46 and caught a Rattata and named him Jupiter.
 - Route 30 yielded a Rattata for me :(
 - Caught a Bellsprout on Route 31 and named him Cocktaker.
 - Took a quick walk into DARK CAVE and caught a Geodude named Rockgroin with my final pokeball, which was terriying because I thought I had more than one left, and if it had broken out I would've forfeited my Pokemon from this area D:
 - Arrived in Violet City!

As of now my team is as follows:

Jupiter - Level 6 Rattata
Rockgroin - Level 6 Geodude
Flappy - Level 7 Pidgey
Frosty - Level 9 Cyndaquil
Cocktaker - Level 3 Bellsprout

 - A quick walk onto Route 32 yielded a Rattata :(
 - As did Sprout Tower :(

Stefan mentioned the idea perhaps satirically, and I think it would be pretty cool SO I AM GOING TO MAKE SOME EMERALD CHALLENGESup as I go along.

Video proof isn't required, screenshot proof will be nice where feasible, Im mostly going on the Honour system here because I have enough faith in you guys~

Note I am not making emerald images, NO SIR, I have something FAR BETTER IN STORE.

Completing challenges will earn you Points of Awesome(TM) and when you have certain amounts you will be given AN EMBLEM OMG.

So anyway, Chaos Emeralds and Green first. And shut up because the Chaos ones are always piss easy.
SA2B Green Chaos Emerald Challenge

- Complete Metal Harbour Mission 1 as Sonic in under 1 minute and 40 seconds.

SA2B Yellow Chaos Emerald Challenge

- In any of Shadow's levels, collect 200 rings and finish the stage on Mission 1. Also as Shadow.

SA2B Pink Chaos Emerald Challenge

- Begin a new save file and begin the Dark Story. Complete Iron Gate Mission 1 as Eggman without taking a hit.

SA2B Blue Chaos Emerald Challenge

- In Eternal Engine Mission 1, destroy 11 or more Artificial Chaos enemies, and then complete the level, as Tails, in his mech.

SA2B White Chaos Emerald Challenge

- Complete Final Chase Mission 1, as Shadow. You may touch no more than 4 rails throughout the whole level. If you die and reload from a checkpoint, any rails you touched in between the checkpoint and the death are removed from your tally.

SA2B Red Chaos Emerald Challenge

- In Weapons Bed Mission 1, as Eggman, destroy 70 lock-on targets in under 60 seconds as tracked by the in-game timer.

SA2B Sky Blue Chaos Emerald Challenge

- In Egg Quarters Mission 1, as Rouge, collect all 3 keys without ever being detected by the Egg Beetle Robot Thing. If you are detected at any time you must begin the stage over.

SA2B Golden Chaos Emerald Challenge

- In Metal Harbour Mission 4, as Sonic, collect enough rings to earn a Perfect at the end of the level, and then finish the stage within the time limit.

SA2B Green Super Emerald Challenge

- Complete Radical Highway Mission 1 as Shadow in under 2 minutes.

SA2B Yellow Super Emerald Challenge

- In any of Sonic's levels, collect 400 rings and finish the stage on Mission 1. Also as Sonic.

SA2B Pink Super Emerald Challenge

- Defeat the Biolizard as Shadow without taking a hit during the encounter. You may not repeatedly homing attack his body to reach his life support system faster.

SA2B Blue Super Emerald Challenge

- In Cannons Core Mission 1, Knuckles section, collect all of the rings in his section and then complete it. As Knuckles. You may not have the Air Necklace upgrade for this challenge.

SA2B White Super Emerald Challenge

- Complete Wild Canyon Mission 5, as Knuckles. Once you leave the ground of the starting platform, you may not allow Knuckles to stand on a horizontal surface, with the exception of a single pillar in the wind tunnel room, for the entire duration of the level. Choose wisely!

SA2B Red Super Emerald Challenge

- In Green Forest Mission 1, as Sonic, complete the level while scoring no more than 10 points, time bonus excluded. You may not die at any point during your run.

SA2B Sky Blue Super Emerald Challenge

- Clear Route 101 Mission 5 as Tails. You may not use a Boost at any time, nor touch another vehicle.

Wikkity! / NEW AND IMPROVED: TSCA 2.0
« on: May 16, 2009, 01:37:47 am »
Yeaaaa.

EDIT: If you played this pre postedit (probably not), if you DL this brand new (TM) link there is more to play, IE the other main party, also a pseudo secret!

EDIT 2: If you played the second upload you may be aware there is no boss for mike if you dont do the "secret". That is now fixed,

EDIT3: If you played the second upload and found pressing Z for 15 minutes to kill the secret boss annoying, Ive now altered him to die quicker and dish out more damage. <_<

http://www.yousendit.com/download/MnFqaXRETSt0QTEzZUE9PQ

This am a teaser, I would be ashamed of myself to call it a beta.

Basically you can play the first fight and check out RPG's party and their starting abilities, and the first few cutscenes. oh and play mikes first dungeon too, and also try out the hard mode for mikes first boss.

I won't be releasing things like this to people not directly involved in it (ie Thorn gets everything ever, but there are a bunch of other folk that will get to beta stuff too), so dont expect this sort of treat very often >_>

That said I am actually motivated to work on this right now, lets see how long this lasts

Also note, ye olde TSCA is pretty much abandoned, I dont plan to work on it further, and this one is not a remake of that.

Gaming and Grazing / TSC League!~
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:23:11 pm »
The league will begin at 23:59 on Friday GMT, Round 1 will end at 23:59 on Friday GMT a week later. The levels will be posted at this time, although I may post teaser info to keep you guys guessing 24 hours in advance~

Also, if you have not signed up yet, have no fear! You are welcome to still submit for round 1 and I wil include you in the rankings at the end. Relatedly, late submissions will not be counted. If you are going to miss an entire week for some reason, notify me in advance and we'll work something out. Other acceptable excuses include TSC being down at the end of a round, because I know that plenty of people get last minute stats.

So, judging from the response to Marathon 2 it's pretty clear that people didn't really want to devote 3 hours of their time again to playing S1, S2 and S3&K in a row again, so, I figured I'd make a post about a league that would run for maybe 7/8 weeks or so and would require considerably less time investment while still remaining fun and competitive for all involved!

The format!

For the first half of the tournament (the long half), it will be in league format. This part of the tourny will last for 4 or 5 weeks (probably 5) and consist of as many rounds as it does weeks:

Each week, I will post 5 levels from S1, S2, and S3&K which range in difficulty to TA from easy to hard (Absolutely bonkers strats notwithstanding). These could be anything, the only things not included are S2K, and Tails' from S3&K (Valid reasons can be provided for this decision if anyone cares).

It is then the goal of all players in the league to TA the 5 levels posted for the week and PM me their best runs in .giz format, where I will then calculate the winners for each act and the round and award points.

Playoffs!

After 4 or 5 rounds pass,  roughly the top half of the league will be seeded and ordered into an elimination style bracket. Each play-off round will consist of one level and will last for 3 days.

Scoring!

Me and mike need to work out an appropriate scoring system (hi mike!), however, I'd like to point out in advance that I don't intend for the scoring system to ever award a player 0 points for a submission. 0 will be reserved for people who do not submit a time for a given level.

Rules!

Sonic alone. (Or Knux if its a Knux level)
In S3K, for example if you had to play Icecap 2 - Sonic, you would start from Act 2 via level select. You are not permitted to bring shields or otherwise set up crazy tricks via act 1.
Use S3K. S3 and S&K alone are disallowed.
Bonus stages and dieing are completely fair game.
Super forms am b&

If anyone has any questions related to this I'd be happy to answer them

In essence this was Paraxade's idea, Im simply posting it because Im bored.

So there were come hiccoughs at the start of yesterdays marathon, most notably that everyone expected 11PM to be the start time, and not the beginning of the preparation (as I had intended but I fucking fell asleep like a retard). Because of this, Miles ended up missing the start of the marathon and subsequently not competing, even after directly notifying people involved that he would be a few minutes late.

Apart from Miles, a few other people that had intended to take part ended up missing it too, namely eredani, Upth, and almost myself, I joined in when I woke up an hour after the start.

Paraxade's idea was simply to rehost the marathon and give everyone who missed out for one reason or another the chance to do it again, though I dont see why anyone who participated yesterday cant participate again should they so wish too.

The rules seemed to work ok from what I read of the log, and the only real issue was people hounding RR to countdown ASAP, so they should be fine.

I guess we could run Marathon2 in a fortnights time, saturday 11PM GMT again, as that gives anyone that participated yesterday a break if they want to compete again.

Ill add a signups tally here eventually if numbers permit it

Gaming and Grazing / COMING SOON! To Channel TSC!
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:24:10 pm »
I'm thinking this will take place either Friday night or Saturday night, to best cater for people that want to participate.

SO FAR IT IS LOOKING TO BE SATURDAY NIGHT. TIME NOT YET CONFIRMED.

11PM GMT IS THE CURRENT START TIME

So as some of you will be aware, last night TSC raced Sonic 1, then Sonic 2, then Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

THE DREAM IS THIS

A marathon race, of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, then Sonic 3&K, as Sonic alone.

All participants would begin at Sonic 1, and progress to Sonic 2 once they clear Final Zone.
Then they would dash through Sonic 2, and progress to Sonic 3&K after they clear Death Egg.
The challenge would be clear once the screen fades at the end of Doomsday Act 2 (Death Egg 2's Second Boss, for those not in the know.)

Once you game over, thats it, you're out (providing you have no continues), and you cannot just rejoin in at a later game, seeing as not everyone will start S2/3&K at the same time? Addendum: Trying to work out some sort of penalty system for letting you do so.

This would be an epic test of endurance and skill, the ultimate challenger for any TSCer!

Whos in!?

IMPORTANT STUFF

First and foremost, game is tracked IN REAL TIME.

Secondly, game overs. (This is SonicAD's suggestion)

When a player game over's (And has no continues), they restart on the level they were on, and receive +1 to their game over tally (example below). They then restart at the beginning of the act they were on, read the section on recording for what to do when/if you game over.

The second point with this is how the results will be determined. Game Overing adds 1 to your fail Game Over tally. Players with 1 Game Over cannot be ranked higher than players with none, even if they finish faster. 2 Game Overs cant be ranked higher than 1 Game Over etc etc. Each game over also adds 10 minutes to your finish time.

IE

1st - Person A Time: 3 hours or something
2nd - Person B  Time: 3 hours 15 minutes
3rd - Person D  Time: 3 hours 45 minutes
4th - Person C Time: 3 hours 30 minutes (1 GO)

etc.

Thirdly, recording.

.giz or .gmv are fine, use whichever emulator you prefer. In the event of a game over, KEEP RECORDING, go back to the title screen/optionsand input the level select cheat, or use your save file if your up to S3K, then go to the level you were on.

In terms of where to start recording, we will all start, from a frozen recording AT THE SONIC1 TITLE SCREEN. Recording of the other games should begin as soon as the rom is loaded.

Also note, if the game legitimatly freezes on you (and it isnt the emulator), this is what you should do:
[17:32] <+RPG> You should end the .giz
[17:32] <+RPG> restart the rom, start recording a new one and dont overwrite
[17:32] <+RPG> and level select to the level you were on

Yes you will lose lives and continues probably, but unfortunatly that is a case of tough luck

IMPORTANT NOTE!! When you start running Sonic 2, don't forget to select Sonic Alone through the Options menu!

Special Stages and Bonus Stages are completely fair game, as is super/hyper sonic should you wish to sacrifice finishing quickly for being mostly invincible.

Also it is totally mandatory to post your level times each time you clear a level while its tallying/fading

I think thats all, if theres anything else Ill update it to here later.

Achlys, myself and SJ all participated

Achlys took the lead in Angel Island, with myself and SJ following.

I did really shit and ended up a zone behind everyone else by Icecap, and SJ was ahead.

Achlys game over'd in Icecap.

SJ moved onto Mushroom Hill about the time I started Launch Base >_>

I caught him up slowly but surely, doing almost all of Sandopolis 2 in the dark because I didnt feel like turning the lights on <_<

I passed SJ and cleared Lava Reef before him, and was a little ahead after Hidden Palace!

Then I screenwrapped Sky Sanctuary and SJ didnt know how and I got really far ahead :( Then he game over'd :(

But I valiantly carried on and completed the game! Even after an embarassing death against eggman running away with the master emerald >_>

All in all fun times

Wikkity! / ITT Trackmania Nations FOREVER

Some of you may be familiar with this arcadeyish style PC racing game while others of you may not. For those that have not heard of this epic game, it has the three fundamental F's of gaming:

Fun
Free
Fucking awesome

I downloaded the latest expansion last night (You dont need any prior version before installing it, though) to find that it is even more epic than before, granted I had not updated my old copy of TMN in about 3 years or so. So, the point of this topic. I just wondered if I could entice anyone else to download this epic game to have some multiplayer fun with it (also free, fucking awesome), the installer is a bit hefty (500MB) but on an average intertube connection these days that shouldnt take more than 3 hours or so to download.

And another thing, it comes with an awesome track editor tool as well, which I have seen some spectacular things achieved with, as well as a -shitload- of custom maps available on the internets for when you tire of the default ones.

So, Im probably gonna be hooked on this a while (doing an LP update recording at the very least later on, though), so if any of you guys have this/get this, let me know~

Wikkity! / Let's Play! Mystaria: The Realms of Lore!
« on: June 08, 2008, 07:23:17 am »
Thats right, itt I am going to playthrough the classic Strategy RPG "Mystaria: The Realms of Lore", released for the Sega Saturn in 1995, and you guys are going to give me input via votes and such to move things along.

Why don't you just play this by yourself RPG?

A good question, I could. I've read through a fair few LP's now, including ones of SRPG's, and I figured I'd give it a try. Its been a good few years since I played it so I no longer remember the majority of things about the game, save for things that annoyed me like the Defend malarkey (more on that below). If this thread fails then I have an excuse to play this game again 'cause I'll have started it anyway >_>

So er, why this game?

Why not?

But I've never heard of it!

Lies, it was in the topic title when you clicked on it (or next to it if you clicked here from IRC). Anyway, Im gonna give a (hopefully) brief overview of the game.

Mystaria plays as a standard SRPG for the most part; you have a group of assorted dudes with various abilities who move around a grid on a variety of maps, bashing other dudes about going through the story until the game is over, with more and more dudes joining along the way until you're eventually forced to leave people out of the party :( While this sounds pretty dull to play (and watch, if I can get sound recording to work, I have videos with stable framerates ready), Id recommend at least giving the genre a try (or watch in this case <_<). However, for those of you that dont want to watch the videos, Ill be screenshotting all of the cutscenes anyway, as well as highlights and such from each battle so fear not.

The storyline isn't particularly strong (as you'll notice >_>), however the character system is where the game really sets itself apart IMO. There are 13 playable characters in the game (all of which you are prompted to name upon meeting), with a variety of different abilities, which level up independantly from the character based on the abilities used. What this means is simply that you can take a character with, lets say, archery and support magic, and turn them into an excellent archer, excellent support mage, or good supporting archer mage. Its not a particularly big thing but its what allows this game to stand up to epic SRPGS like the Shining Force series IMO.

Well thats all fine and well, but just where do we come into all this?

I thought you'd never ask!

What I'd like for you guys to do, is firstly to provide suggestions for character names (the exception being the main character which I have claimed >_>) when prompted. Secondly, Im gonna permit everyone who posts in the thread to "claim" a character as their own (One a first come first served basis incase this thread gets popular enough that there are way more people posting than their are characters available.).

By "claim" I mean, that person chooses how that character develops. Using the above example, if SonicFanTripleEcks21se7en claimed the character and wanted me to raise it as a support mage, I would have it use its support magic where possible, and only use its archery skills if it ran out of MP. Another possibility would be for them to suggest a "style" for the character, using the above example again, if SonicFanWhatever wanted their character to keep as far away from enemies as possible when providing support, I would ensure to do so, similarly if they told me to charge every enemy and cast from close range, I would follow this as closely as possible (Exceptions being the character would die.).

More on those skill classes now, most characters have two and "Defend" though there are exceptions. Anyone that tells me to specialise a character in Defend will be shot. The Defend skills will not be used unless that character cannot do anything else useful. Frighteningly, this is a class and not a single skill. You can level it up by defending. A lot. You get 7 more skills or so in it IIRC. I will not be defendgrinding because it is fucking boring. Also, any characters that are primarily magic users, do not have a melee skill class. So suggestions of "Have my Priestess melee attack every enemy she can" are void. Ill explain each class and skill as we progress through the game and encounter new characters and learn new skills.

And one last thing for you guys to do, while the story is essentially linear, you can choose the order in which you do the initial quests at the beginning of the game, so which I do first will be based upon votes from you all~

I think thats enough of an introduction now, onward we venture to the game itself! :o

Or rather, thats what we would be doing, but the forum is being bitchy with my images, basically: they are 640x448, which is default for SSF, and the forum scales them down to 512x378, which has the unfortunate side effect of sticking terrible looking black lines all over every single one of them and making it impossible to read them. Im trying to get a workaround for this as we speak, but I forgot the admin password to my own websites control panel <_< Besides this, I wonder if it would be possible for Gerbil to increase the size the forum scales images too? If not thats fair enough and Ill try and find another way around this, but if he can it'd be great.

Update 1 is already typed up with the relevant screenshots and is ready to be posted as soon as its actually possible to do so in such a way that the pictures arent ruined.

LP Progress!
