News and Updates / Registration is back up
« on: February 10, 2021, 04:50:59 pm »
I set up a new anti-spam system for registration, so user registrations are now re-enabled.

Some notes:
  • It turns out SMF forums doesn't currently support IPv6 properly, so the IPv6 DNS records have been removed for now.
  • As a reminder, if you have an old password, consider changing it, since TSC now uses https. I recommend using unique passwords per website. A password manager such as KeePassXC helps here.

News and Updates / Submissions are back up
« on: December 01, 2020, 08:53:29 pm »
I finally figured out the underlying issue that I noticed when trying to migrate to the new VPS previously. (It was some difference in how MariaDB 10.3 handled a particular query compared to MySQL 5.x.)

Submissions are back up. Registration is still down for now; I will re-enable it later this week after setting up an updated spam filter.

We had a somewhat extended server outage (around a month or so). We weren't able to get the server back up until last week due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The TSC site has now been moved to my new VPS. Besides improved performance, the new VPS also supports TLS 1.2 and HTTP/2.0. I'll be adding automatic https redirection momentarily, but for now, make sure you use https://www.soniccenter.org/ instead of http.

NOTE: Since we now have https, I highly recommend changing your login password.

Stat submissions and new user registrations are temporarily disabled due to some issues on the new server that I need to fix.

Leaderboard Disputes / draftykranks19: Sonic 2 stats
« on: June 15, 2016, 12:42:09 am »
I noticed you submitted a bunch of Sonic 2 stats. Many of your scores either match the existing #1, or are 10x as much, like on http://www.soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_2/scores/oil_ocean_2/knuckles . Care to say how you managed to do this?

EDIT: You've managed to get 0p in the entire game. Uh huh, sure.

News and Updates / TSC back up after unplanned downtime
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:28:55 pm »
Hi all,

Due to some security issues on the host system, we had to take the server down for extended maintenance. The security issues have been fixed, and TSC's back online.

One BILLION points.

I'm going to have to update the stats table to use 64-bit values. This means effort. :V

Information Kiosk / NOTE: Some stats weren't processed properly recently.
« on: September 05, 2014, 11:04:22 pm »
Due to a glitch in the stat processing queue, several stats submitted today did not get processed correctly.

I marked most of the broken stats as 'DERELICT', so they won't show up anymore. I'm listing those stats here so everyone can fix them.

These other stats need to be resubmitted:

Gamepro011:
  • SH / Bullet Station / Times / Dark, 5:09:61
  • SUWii / Spagonia / Rings / Day 1: 1
  • SUWii / Spagonia / Rings / Night 1: 1
  • SUWii / Spagonia / Rings / Night 2: 1
  • SUWii / Chun-Nan / Rings / Night 2: 1
  • SUWii / Chun-Nan / Rings / Night 3: 1

SonicMega167:

  • S&K / Lava Reef 1 / Rings / Sonic: 418 (Passing through the pipes in this level is easier than passing through the slopes in Mushroom hill.)
  • S&K / Lava Reef 1 / Rings / Tails: 418 (I missed a ring last time, either one of the waterfalls or one of rings in the high speed pipes that you pass through without collecting it.)

DarkspinesSonic:

Information Kiosk / Server upgraded to Debian 7
« on: November 02, 2013, 10:44:50 pm »
Some of you may have noticed a server outage earlier today. That was because I was upgrading the server to Debian 7, which brings with it Linux 3.2, MySQL 5.5, and other updated packages that should improve overall performance.

In addition, I finished adding the base requirements for DECITICKS/CENTITICKS/MILLITICKS, which are needed for some of the M&S games. Videos aren't supported yet, but I'll add support for that later.

Also, I'm going to be working on M&S 2014 charts once the game is out.

News and Updates / The Mario & Sonic Center is open for business!
« on: January 12, 2013, 03:56:39 pm »
Announcing The Mario & Sonic Center, a new subsite for competition in the "Mario & Sonic" series. Currently, we have all three Wii games available for play, though we do plan on adding the (3)DS games in the coming weeks.

I currently hold First Place in all three games. Let's see if any of you can change that. :) (spoiler: you probably will :V)

To get to TMSC, click the new pipe/star icon on the sidebar, or click here: http://mas.soniccenter.org/

News and Updates / Sonic Generations categories renamed
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:26:14 pm »
I finally got around to renaming the Sonic Generations categories.

"Uber Times" is now "Times". This is the category where you can use skills.

The previous "Times" is now "Time Attack". You cannot use skills in this category.

Competition Central / Reviving the idea of M&S charts
« on: August 27, 2012, 10:11:56 am »
A while back, I started to add the required stat types for the M&S games (centiscore, milliscore), but never got around to finishing it.

After playing M&S Winter Olympics in the TSC Marathon this year, I decided that it might be worthwhile to revisit this idea and add charts for everything. So, today I'm going to finish implementing the new stat types.

Which leads to another issue: Charts. What events should and shouldn't be tracked, and what stats do they use?

If anyone has ideas for charts for the three M&S games, post them here. (I don't have the (3)DS games, so someone else will have to manage those.)

Board Games / Announcing the reopening of Board Games!
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:01:23 am »
So it turns out that this forum was hidden from the Board Index since it wasn't in the boardlinks table. Since pretty much everyone has sitemasks turned on (it's the default), no one saw it... until now.

Hence, we're announcing the reopening of Board Games! Go fish or something.

(Thanks to Luxray [aka Cruizer] for notifying me about this board being hidden.)

News and Updates / Registration Problems
« on: December 30, 2010, 02:30:54 am »
The captcha on the new user registration page appears to be broken, and SMF 1.1 is old and dusty anyway. Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to upgrade to SMF 2.0rc4, and hopefully that'll fix a ton of problems. :)

UPDATE [2010/12/30 12:46 PM EST]: SMF has been upgraded, but it seems that the captcha is still screwed up. There's also a bunch of other issues that need to be fixed, which I'll be doing today.

UPDATE 2 [2010/12/30 07:00 PM EST]: The bug was caused by an extra newline in one of the PHP files. This newline ended up showing up at the beginning of the image file. :( Registration is working again. (I'll re-add the registration questions later.)

UPDATE 3 [2010/12/30 07:30 PM EST]: The code for displaying the board index is completely different in SMF 2.0 compared to 1.1, so I won't be able to limit the board index to show forums from the specific subsite only right now. I'll have it working sometime this weekend. (Basically, this means the board index will show boards from all subsites, not just the current subsite.)

UPDATE 4 [2010/12/30 10:30 PM EST]: Most of the CSS is updated. There's a few known issues, which I'll get to this weekend. If anyone discovers any other bugs, please reply to this topic with a description of those bugs.

UPDATE 5 [2011/01/02 03:33 PM EST]: I re-added the registration questions. They're simple questions that pwn most bots, but should allow anyone with any knowledge of Sonic games to register. :P

Known bugs:
  • Stardust themes: Forum appears at the top of the page instead of below the page header. (2011/01/01 11:42 PM EST: Fixed in r1819 and r1820.)
  • Stardust themes: Extraneous boxes around <p> elements. (2010/11/02 01:03 AM EST: Fixed in r1826.)
  • Board index: Site mask isn't applied, so boards from all subsites are displayed regardless of user settings. (2011/01/02 12:16 AM EST: Fixed in r1821.)
  • Chaos Angel: Posts sometimes appear with a black background due to incorrect CSS ordering.
  • Long custom titles aren't properly wrapped in the profile section of message displays. (See SkyLights' custom title for an example.
  • The user profile display page needs work. (Text overlaps where it shouldn't.)
  • Player Matchup: An extra '/' is inserted between 'rankings' and the game name in the data table in the 'Level' and 'Division' columns, resulting in broken links. (2011/01/03 11:06 PM EST: Fixed in r1874.)

Gaming and Grazing / Sonic 2 HD Alpha Release
« on: April 01, 2010, 09:34:59 am »
So I decided to write my own version of the S2HD engine instead of waiting for anything to come from LOst and company, and here's the result.

(click for full-size 1024x768 screenshot)

Emerald Hill Zone and Hill Top Zone are currently fully playable, including bosses.

I've only compiled a Windows version right now, since I had some issues with my Ubuntu 8.04 VM. Source code will be posted this weekend.

Information Kiosk / Random Changes
« on: January 30, 2010, 08:35:22 pm »
Ranking tables that display member names will now indicate if the member is banned by placing an Eggman icon () next to their name.

Other random changes will be posted here when they're done.

[2010/01/30 09:36 PM EST] Fixed rankings display on the Chaos Angel skin with the New Data Table System. (Cell colors weren't being applied correctly, so you couldn't easily determine rankings.)

I have added charts for the latest Sonic Unleashed DLC, which consists of Skyscraper Scamper and Jungle Joyride additions. All Unleashed DLC players should go and submit new stats. :)

Thanks to Groudon and Paraxade for the chart updates.

EDIT: Some newer ring statistics in DLC were capable of reaching 4 digits, but the submissions page was restricting it to 3. This has been fixed.

EDIT 2: Some users have inaccurate time totals due to the addition of time charts. I will remove these inaccurate totals sometime tomorrow.

Leaderboard Disputes / ATTN: dad3i - Phony SA2 Race Times
« on: April 26, 2009, 01:34:18 am »
http://www.soniccenter.org/members/dad3i/sonic_adventure_2_b/races

According to your race charts, you have 3-lap stats that are impossible to obtain with the given 1-lap stats. I PM'd you about this, and all you seemed to do was fudge the numbers to make them look better instead of actually checking the stats from your copy of SA2.

Please respond with an explanation as to why you did this.

Wikkity! / GS/360 v0.1
« on: April 01, 2009, 10:17:27 am »
Announcing GS/360 v0.1, an Xbox 360 emulator that RRODs and Rick Rolls you. (April Fools :P)

Features:
  • Tri-core PowerPC 970 emulation via internal cooperative multithreading. (Real multithreading will be added later.)
  • Hooks into the Win32 API. (The 360's API is similar to Win32.)

Not implemented yet:
  • LAN/WiFi.
  • USB connectivity.
  • More than one controller.
  • Most GPU functionality. (Just enough to get the old dashboard working is implemented.)

Compatibility:
  • Not much so far. The dashboard partially works. (original, not NXE)
  • None of the commercial games I've tried worked.
  • Linux/PPC did boot half-way before panicking.
  • Commercial 360 discs will *not* work on regular drives. You'll need to either connect a 360 drive or mount an ISO image. (Note that this is for testing only, since commercial games don't work yet.)

Please note that this is in early alpha stages. Also, GS/360 only works properly on Windows 2000 and later (though it may work on older versions a little). I tried it with WINElib, but WINElib unfortunately doesn't implement essential Win32 kernel functions.

Download v0.1 here: http://www.soniccenter.org/gerbilsoft/gs360.zip

Source code is available at http://www.soniccenter.org/gerbilsoft/gs360-src.tar.gz . (Note that the incbin paths may be incorrect, so you'll have to change paths in the src/*.S files.) (You will need the SDL, zlib, libpng, and FFmpeg development libraries.)

News and Updates / Ten Million Stats!
« on: March 18, 2009, 08:43:36 pm »
We have broken the ten million stat mark on TSC! (Stats include automated updates, so this isn't representative of actual submissions.)

Alas, stat #10,000,000 was an automated stat, so I have chosen two other stats in addition to the ten millionth stat for awards.

Stat #10,000,000: Thorn - TSC: Sonic Rivals 2 / Scores / Overall (Anyone), 9p, automated

Next non-automated stat:
Stat #10,000,018: FoxBoy - TUSC: The Mystic Realm / Times / Archive Aerial Garden 1 (Sonic), 0:17

Next non-automated TSC stat:
Stat #10,000,081: CrUiZ3R - TSC: Sonic Rivals 2 / Times / Mystic Haunt 1 (Anyone), 1:33:22

Congratulations to all winners! Here's to stat #20,000,000. :)

Wikkity! / Al Qaeda Suspects "Making Detonators Out Of Sega Cartridges"
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:48:00 pm »
http://kotaku.com/5075231/al-qaeda-suspects-making-detonators-out-of-sega-cartridges

Quote
So it's true - there really is a link between violence and video games. In an otherwise run of the mill article on how the next US President will have to deal with the issue of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the New York Times printed this little nugget:

One detainee is said to have been schooled in making detonators out of SEGA game cartridges.

Nobody at Kotaku (especially those who frequently travel overseas) has any idea if that is even possible, or why SEGA specifically, but the story seems to originate from the case of Hassan Bin Attash - a seventeen year old (at time of capture) detainee that several human rights organisations claim was tortured in Jordan before being held in Gitmo. Possibly, after a few months of waterboarding a weaponized copy of Toe Jam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron might seem more credible.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Blast Processing".

Gaming and Grazing / Gens/GS Milestone 6
« on: September 03, 2008, 02:06:00 am »
Recently, I've decided to clean up the Gens source code. So far, I've cleaned up the codebase quite a bit, ported some features from Gens Rerecording, and added some new features, including PNG screenshot and 7z support.

UPDATE: Gens/GS Milestone 6 (2.15.5/GS-m6) is out! Get it at http://info.sonicretro.org/Gens/GS

Milestone 6 introduces the new plugin system (internal plugins at first), plus has a bunch of other changes.

High-level TODO list, in no particular order:
- Move global variables to a global Settings struct.
- Port all changes from Gens Rerecording.
- Add Qt4 UI in addition to the GTK+ UI.
- Switch to the CMake build system instead of GNU automake.
- Convert all code to C++ using classes.
- VGM dumping support
- Add more compression format support.
- Improve the Zip File Selection Dialog.

Low Priority:
- MacOS X UI

Emulator TODO list:
- VRAM overwrite bug: Sonic 2 Delta works in Gens, but has VRAM corruption in Kega and the real console.
- Illegal Address bug: Gens' emulated CPU doesn't crash on an illegal address exception, but Kega and the real console do.
- Sprite priority bug. RESOLVED WORKSFORME
- Overclocking! Add an option to overclock the emulated CPUs so Sonic 2 2P doesn't lag.
- Proper support for 448 lines in interlaced mode. (Sonic 2 2P)
- Set the border color to color 0 of palette 0. (See Sonic 1 GHZ for an example.)
- Z80 initialization bug: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=11192
- Erase the entire MD palette when a new ROM is loaded.
