Haven't played a Pokemon game in a while, though I sometimes go on Netbattle. I'm on Smogon, as FireLaserBeam if you go there, though don't expect to see me all the time.

*rolls eyes* :( The season was great, but the theme song, agh. :( but I was pretty young when it first came out, so I probably enjoyed it. X) When was Pokemon shown here, '96 or '99? I can't remember. :X I think it's 99 since I was in Grade school when it came to here. Meh.

The first season was '97 in Japan and '98 in U.S.A./Canada.
That means that some of the kids that watch the show now
weren't even born when the first season was on. (makes me feel old,
and makes the show seem even more ridiculously long and boring)

I think one of the reasons I don't like it anymore is how long it is
(the messed-up Rocket motto isn't so great the 400th time),
but it seems to have just gotten worse, anyway.
When I watch old videos of Pokémon (or about any other show),
I see all this stuff that 4Kids would've ripped out now.
GASP! Crosses and angels! Reference to death! A car crash!
Injured Pokémon! Japanese text! Chopsticks! So much offensive content!

"Kill" is now a swear word, according to 4Kids (no kidding),
and they can't make any references to religion, Japan, death, violence, video games, etc.

I used to be a big Pokemon fanatic. I had the trading cards, watched the cartoon and even went to see a movie in theatres. However, I lost interested as a got older and became interested in other stuff. Every now and then, I will regain a temporary interest in Pokemon again after seeing and episode or playing a game. I can still rhyme of some of my favourites.

If I was in charge of dubbing and er... 'censorship'... of games and anime and such, things would be very different. Allow my to make full use of facetious HTML and words that I am not sure of the meaning of, and provide you with an unordered list. To the face.

<li>Only swear words that are actually swear words get censored. 'Damn', 'hell', 'God', "blimey", not swear words. Christians, no offence, but gtfo my language kplz. If we censored things completely by Christian morals and ethics... well... this brings me onto the next point.</li>
<li>Censoring religion and crap, what's up with that. Most importantly, non-religious crosses can stay (read: red crosses, as in the CHARITY you idiot censors), and other such non-religious things that over-whatever idiots think could be misconstrued. I think it's time for another bullet point.</li>
<li>No more of this censoring 'possibly religiously offensive' or 'politically incorrect' stuff. In fact, in the censorship process, I'd be liable to double if not treble the amount of offense, to offend all minorities. Heck, and all majorities, too.</li>
<li>Boobs. Bigger. Bouncier.</li>
<li>And enough with this extension of women's clothing. "OHNOES HER SHORTS R 2 SHORT" piss off. Her shorts aren't short enough. They are clearly far too... existant. I am pro belt-skirts and... no... tops. Let's see editing of characters' clothes put to a better use, by which I mean revealing more skin. By which I mean primarily on females.</li>
<li>None of this 'fainting', 'whiting out' or 'defeating' nonsense. Your Pokémon got 'knocked unconscious', you 'ran away like a wuss', all cuz some trainer 'beat the crap out of' your team. Kthx.</li>
<li>I've decided the phrase 'Game Over' is too overused and too... polite. Let's see more "FAILURE" screens (gg SSBM) and like... "You're Bloody Crap At This" screens.</li>
<li>I'd give the player to ability to shoot fucking annoying dogs that laugh at you that you can't shoot despite the fact that you are holding a shotgun aimed right between his eyes and are rampantly pulling the trigger.</li>
<li>Good voice actors. If possible, the Japanese ones can do their own English voices. I know they can all speak English.</li>
<li>More bigger and bouncier breasts.</li>
<li>No more... increasing the number of morals and ethics portrayed through the dialogue. It's just wrong. The message I want to get from a game is that people can be revived by some magical potion that I don't rightly know what it looks like but is made from a mythical bird, except for when people die as part of the plot.</li>
</ul>

-Trust me, the Japanese versions of an anime are typically better than the English versions. 4Kids has a reputation for over editing and censoring animes. They'll even cut out the guns which is why we'll never see "The Legend of Dratini" in America. IIRC, the "Beauty and the Beach" (I hope I got that name right) was heavily edited before it was aired long after where it was supposed to take place in the series.
-I used to play the card game as well. I had this weird grass control deck that I would use in the leagues. It did quite well in the local tournaments, getting me as far as second place in one of them.

1. The first two are swear words, at least in Canada. When God's name is used
the wrong way, it's not a swear, but I still don't like it because it's disrespectful.
As for removing religious stuff to avoid offending anyone, I think it's more
offensive to remove it in some cases. For example, they can put
"Happy Holidays" to avoid offending the people that don't like calling
Christmas by its real name, but then they bug everyone else with their
stupid and unnecessary changes.
2&3. Again, it's just silly and unnecessary to remove references to religion. (see 1.)
4&10. You'd get some extreme responses if you did that.
You'd get a letter that's like "DROOOL!!!111", and another that's like
"Hey! How dare you show something like that?"
5. (see 4.) Think about what that would mean for poor Sonic. :(
(as if he isn't already creeped-out enough)
6. It works in Pokémon, and even the blacking out doesn't make sense.
In other shows, however, the "defeating" or "taking away" is really dumb,
especially because Sonic X is trying to change what happened in
the games while making the truth super-obvious.
8. I feel that way a lot. "AAGH! STUPID CHARACTER! STOP MOCKING/
LAUGHING AT/BLOCKING/ANNOYING/CAPTURING* ME!
(*like when the main character can kill any of the bad guys effortlessly,
but he/she still has to sneak past because he/she would surrender to the
enemies right after being detected and caught)
9. In other words, get the SA actors back in the games and show.
(Actually, there must be better actors who sound almost the same,
but don't make mistakes or sound really bad so often.)

It sure would be... uh... interesting if you were in charge.
Like I said, you'd get some extreme responses. I wonder if there'd
be more positive or negative opinions.

If I did the censoring... well, I mostly wouldn't. It's mostly okay the way it is.
If there are guns, then don't show it to the 5-year-olds!
You don't have to butcher the shows (driving away the real audience)
just to make them appropriate for kids that weren't meant to watch them, anyway.
For example, I'd just fix up the language in Sonic X a bit, and then leave the rest.

Aside from the Red Gyrados in Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, I've only caught 1 shiny Pokemon, that one being a Golbat in Ruby. It evolved into a Crobat and was pinkish.

Actually, if you notice carefully, the last post before the 'revival' of the topic was from February 14th 2006, meaning this thread was a year and a week, or 53 weeks old when it was brought back from the dead =P

But anywhos... I'm looking forward to the release of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. It's been a while since the last new proper handheld adventure (R/S/E being the last, and FR/LG were remakes), and these games are also offering a lot of cool features from what has been found out about them. Plus, it finally gives me a much needed reason to use my DS again =P Just a shame the game isn't coming out in Europe until several months after the US at the earliest, and importing the game from the US is supposedly going to be very tough, from what I've been hearing Nintendo has planned in order to prevent it happening...

And on the subject of shinies, I've only got one: a shiny Diglett on my LG cartridge Xp
