Sonic 2 (2013) - Chemical Plant 1 rings question

In the videos I've seen on YouTube of ring attacks on this level (as Sonic in particular) they pick up a lightning shield. When I get that shield, it seems to be... just a shield. Did the lightning shield get removed in an update? If so, what does this mean the new maximum ring amount is? And what about the leaderboards? (This probably also affects scores too.)

you have to first go to level select, then play the sound 0 3 times in sound test, then you can select to enable elemental shields
